The 59th Annual Grammys went down last night, a night that featured tears, joy, political protests and a notable list of absentees. Adele won big, nabbing five Grammy’s winning both album of the year 25 and record of the year Hello .
Adele dedicated half of her award to Beyounce, The ‘Lemonade’ album is monumental, so monumental, so well-thought-out, so beautiful and soul-baring,” Adele said as Beyoncé looked on from her seat in Staples Center and mouthed the words “Thank you.
Beyoncé won two of the nine categories she was nominated in, Lemonade won for urban contemporary album and “Formation” won the music video award.
The late David Bowie won five Grammy’s, Black Star won best alternative music album, rock song, rock performance, engineered Nonclassical album and recording package.
Chance the Rapper made his mark on the evening bagging the awards for best Rap Performance for his track “No Problem”. He also took home best Rap Album and the prestigious Best New Artist category, Lauren Hill was the last black artist to win this category back in 1999. Even more imprresive is the fact that Colouring Book has picked up all these awards and it’s a mixtape, Chance is still hasn’t signed to a record label.
As expected there was political commentary throughout the evening, with A Tribe Called Quest’s delivering a powerful performance and call to arms for all minorities in the United States. Busta Rhymes and Andersoon Paark also featured in the performance, check out the protest to “Agent Orange” below.
Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Kanye West all boycotted this years Grammys, predominantly in protest to the nomination and award process that the academy has. Frank went on record to say that Kendrick Lamar‘s album should have been the Album of the Year winner, and Taylor‘s win was “hands down of the of most faulty TV moments I’ve seen. While the lack of even one nomination for Frank‘s two critically acclaimed albums, Blonde and Endless, is the reason Kanye is sitting out the show this year.
